ESTABLISHMENT OF CONSTRUCTION THEORY OF LARGE GOSSAMER SPACE STRUCTURE SYSTEM AND QUEST FOR FEASIBLE CONSTRUCTION SCENARIO
[updated: November 2018]
This research started in FY2018 and will complete in FY2020 under the support by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) of MEXT (KAKENHI KIBAN-A). The following 8 researchers are the project member;
This research project aims for the resolution of the following four subjects. Our laboratory is responsible for the subject 2 and 3, and discussing the senario (subject 4) with above researchers.
[Subject 1] |
To show the concept and form of the structure that enables to enlarge the gossamer structure considering the ease of prediction of behaviour, fabrication, testing, integration, and on-orbit operation.
|
[Subject 2] |
To show the theory of the mechanics that predicts the behaviour of the structure such as deployment, connection, and separation so precisely that it can be applied to the design, development, and operation of real gossamer space structure systems. |
[Subject 3] |
To propose the procedure of the construction of the structures such as solar power sail, starshade, and SSPS in space by applying the results of Subject 1 and 2. |
[Subject 4] |
To show the senario to realize the large gossamer structure considerd in Subject 3. |

We presented the following paper in IAC2018 held in Bremen Exhibition and Conference Center.
- Fukunaga, Miyazaki, Shitara, Kousaka, Nakamura, "Application of Self-Deployable Truss to Starshade"
This congress was a very good opportunity for us to highlight our research because there had been proposed only the flower-petal shaped occulter by NASA so far.

Project meeting #2 at Hokkaido Touya Fhoenix Club
[Detail...] |
We had the research camp on this project at the training facility "Touya Phoenix Club" near the Touya Lake, Hokkaido. Six project member participated in the camp. In the meering, we discussed on the future of the research of large space structure as well as the research progress. In the result, we decided to focus on the research for realizing large space structure system of 100m, and summarized the research topics.
We will show our plan at the conferences and various meetings.

Project meeting #1 at Nihon University College of Science and Technology
[Detail...] |
We had the first meeting at Nihon University College of Science and Technology in Ochanomizu city, which was a little late because we waited for the result of the interview of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (S) of MEXT (KIBAN-S). Our proposal for KIBAN-S was the expansion of the this research, i.e. KIBAN-A. We discussed and confirmed again the plan of KIBAN-A because our proposal for KIBAN-S was not accepted.
In the discussion, there was the proposal that we should discuss more on the future large space structure system, ans we concluded to have the research camp within a few month.

Visit of Sakase-Adtech Co., Ltd in Sakai city, Fukui
[Detail...] |
We visited Sakase Adtech Co., Ltd. Sakase Adtech is a supplier of composite materials, especially triaxial woven fablic, lightweight high rigidity boom, and so on. We introduced our project to them and discussed on the self-extensible booms that we will use in our project. Furtermore, we visited the Industrial Technology Center of Fukui Prefecture, and toured the environmental testing facilities.
We will make a self-deployable membrane truss of about 1.8m diameter. The booms for the truss will be made by Sakase Adtech.

Brief introduction of project
This research aims for the establishment of the construction theory of large gossamer space structure system that is easy to make the prediction of the behaviour in space, to fabricate, test, and integration on the ground. For this purpose, we will propose novel concepts and methods on
- Structural concept and form to enable the increasing in size
- the method to deployment, connection, and separation in space
- the prediction method and its accuracy of the behaviour of structure system in space
for large space structures of several ten meters or one hundred meters consisting of extremely flexible structural member (gossamer structure) such as membranes and cables, which has not been realized yet. We will conduct the formulation of theory, numerical analysis, and experimental analysis.
We will show a practical senario to realize such a system based on the theory and the technology with the considerion of the social situation, which proves that our theory is not "armchair plan" but applicable to the real spacecraft. We will show the procedure of the space demonstration of our theory along the proposed senario. The above four subjects will be solved to achieve this plan. Then, we will
- contribute to propose future novel space sicence/utilization mission,
- contribute to the development of the research on flexible multi-body dynamics, geometric mechanics, and
- mathematical sciences such as ORIGAMI-sicence.
