President’s Message

Horoshi Yamakawa
President
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

JAXA has entered the 4th period of its Mid to Long-Term Objectives since April 2018.

JAXA has long played a leading role to solve social issues and promote industry. However, as space and aeronautical fields have been rapidly changing worldwide, we are now facing a fierce competition. In addition, roles required of research and development institutions are changing. Given these circumstances, JAXA, as a National Research and Development Agency, aims to evolve into an organization that creates new values for society.

In order to be an organization that keeps challenging, JAXA needs to boost its productivity and provide more active roles to its diverse human resources including female workers through its employees’ work style reform and diversity promotion.

Having established a general employer action plan in accordance with the Act on Promotion of Women's Participation and the Act on Advancement of Measures to Support Raising Next-Generation Children, JAXA is now engaged in improving its workplace environment and managerial mind-set. In order to foster an environment in which its employees can balance work and child-rearing, JAXA opened the second nursery school within one of its premises in April 2018 by utilizing the program of the company-led nursery business set up by the Cabinet Office.

JAXA continues to increase its productivity while accelerating the promotion of the work style reform and good work-life balance with an aim to create an ideal workplace where all the employees can work more vigorously than before.

JAXA has expressed the approval for the ”Declaration on Action” by a group of male leaders who will create “A Society in which Women Shine” backed by the Gender Equality Bureau Cabinet Office. Its three pillars, "Taking actions and sending messages ourselves," "Disrupting the status quo," and "Developing networking," correspond to the JAXA’s direction. We will further expand women’s active roles in society.
