Effects of Support

From FY 2006, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has been promoting the support of activities of female researchers in universities, etc., based on its policy, and much has been achieved. According to the results of MEXT’s survey, the female researchers undergoing life events who received research support under the research support system (if such a system was available at their workplace) were able to present four times more papers and acquire three times more external funds compared with their non-supported counterparts. This result proves that the system enhances the successful activities of female researchers.
Meanwhile, from the viewpoint of turnover rates, the average turnover rates of 55 organizations, which received support for the model project of supporting female researchers funded by the former Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology, were reduced to one third of that when not supported (excluding turnover due to mandatory retirement), according to results of a survey conducted by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Especially, the placement of research support staff during child-rearing periods was regarded as highly effective.
